Tonight will be our first show as Bent Shapes and we’re psyched to be playing with our good friends Shepherdess and stellar San Franciscans Grass Widow at Great Scott. Our last release, Cull Shorts, is now available via mail order from Cake Time Records. This CD collects most of what we released over the past couple years on cassette, vinyl 7”, and in digital single form, with a previously unreleased version of “Slugger” added.

How to get all our recordings real cheap:
1. Buy Cull Shorts for $5 through our Bandcamp page. You get the CD in the mail, plus an immediate digital download in your choice of format.
2. Download the cassette version of “Slugger” and “Good To Be True” for free (they’re the only two not on Cull Shorts).

If you want, you can also still find some mp3s on blogs for free, or you can download just the songs you want for $1 apiece from the Bandcamp page repping each individual EP or single.

Final reminder! We added a second guitarist and became Bent Shapes. Head over to the new website to check out some songs and see the same pictures I am about to post of our new 7” flexi demo on Cake Time Records (available at our first show as Bent Shapes, with Shepherdess and Grass Widow next Wednesday at Great Scott). Limited edition, bright blue on translucent red, in polybags, and very hard to photograph.

RIP Anthony

Earlier today, we learned that Anthony Poynter passed away after an arduous battle with cancer.

I didn’t know Anthony as well as many in his wide circle of friends and loved ones, but what I do know is that Anthony was a champion of independent music and a total sweetheart. He literally booked every show I’ve ever played in his home state of Kentucky, always ready lend a hand with a hall, community-run space, house, cafe etc. If he couldn’t put you up for the night, he knew someone that could. If you were hungry, he’d find you something to eat. Each summer, it seemed like he was simultaneously strengthening his community and acting as a one-man scene, and it didn’t surprise me to learn that he was still attending shows and releasing records after his diagnosis. We didn’t get to see each other as often as I might have liked, but regardless of how well he knew you, Anthony gave out hugs like highfives. I wish I had the chance to give him one more, and watching the outpouring of support from all over the globe today and in the past year, I know there’s a lot of people that feel the same way. Rest in peace, man.

Today we got the e-mail that changed everything. We are extremely excited to announce that SXSW just announced to us, via our e-mail, that our friend Bruce Springsteen has been accepted to showcase at this year’s festival. We are honored to sacrifice our spot at this time-honored event to a little-known songwriter who we hope will finally find the audience he deserves. For years, SXSW has presented an unprecedented opportunity for up-and-coming acts like Bruce’s to break out of niche scenes and gain the recognition that their talent warrants, catapulting them over the heads of the old guard of industry executives that stand at the gates of stardom.
